Dr Gibbs completed his Medical Degree at Stellenbosch University in 2005.
He started his anaesthesia training in Pietermaritzburg and after time in rural KwaZulu Natal, he worked as an anaesthetic House Officer in South East Kent in the UK. Subsequently he specialised in Anaesthesia at Groote Schuur Hospital, completing his specialty training at UCT in 2017. In 2017, Dr Gibbs passed the written component of the British Society of Echocardiography Transthoracic Echo exam. Dr Gibbs was a consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital until 2023, where he worked in a wide variety of specialities, chiefly hepatobiliary (including liver transplantation), vascular, cardiothoracics and obstetrics. He was involved in teaching, training and examining anaesthesia trainees, and was active in research for perioperative care, regional anaesthesia, obstetrics, point-of-care ultrasound, transthoracic and transoesaphageal echocardiography as well as patient blood management.
Dr Gibbs has been an associate member of Atlantic Anaesthetics since 2023.
In his spare time, he enjoys trail running, hiking and rock climbing as well as exploring this beautiful country with his wife and three children.
